Research multiple ideas before picking one
When we launch businesses out of our Studio, we have the entrepreneurs start by researching multiple ideas before they select one. There is often a theme, but we find it valuable to spend the time broadly exploring before jumping in specifically.
Find a theme you are passionate about
Only the entrepreneur can decide what markets or types of problems really excite them. Start there when exploring. Being a founder is incredibly hard; if you aren’t passionate about the problem you are solving it can be easy to quit.
Explore multiple ideas
Don’t just fall in love with the first idea. You probably shouldn’t get married on your first date, so spend the time to date the idea for a while and compare it to other ideas. As you start comparing to other ideas, you can feel which idea keeps pulling you in and you can’t get it out of your head. Look for the idea that every time you learn more in customer discovery, you get more excited.
Find authentic demand
Finally, no matter what you think of the idea, look for authentic demand. We don’t launch a business in our Studio until we get early design partners to pay to build a first version with us. Be careful falling in love with your idea and building too much too soon.
When you have evaluated multiple ideas, you have a much stronger conviction on choosing the idea you are passionate about and have proven authentic demand.
